"Homespun Arts and Crafts Show" is an event
where artists and customers can come and enjoy fine arts and crafts in
a pleasant and friendly atmosphere. We now offer over fifty outside
booth spaces, as well as many indoor booth spaces in our gymnasium.
There will also be a selection of beautiful plants for sale. There will
be attractions for the kids, too. We invite you to come and experience
two fun-filled days with us here at the Athens Bible school campus on
May 7th and 8th, 2010. Show times are: Friday 10am to 6pm and Saturday
9am to 4pm. Admission is free!
A Little "Homespun" History...
In
the year 1980, Joseph Olson, (principal at Athens Bible School), Bob Thompson, and
others involved in an art class at the school were discussing
fundraisers and the idea for an “Arts and Crafts” show evolved. It was
decided that the school would have an “Arts and Crafts” show to raise
money to purchase a school bus. Craft booths were made available to
vendors for a minimal fee, and meals were served in the school
lunchroom. Demonstrations of quilting (with a quilt show), soap making,
spinning and weaving, chair caning, pottery, blacksmithing, and a
gristmill were additional attractions. Live music by the students and
professionals also entertained the crowds. Mr. Thompson had an Indian
tent with authentic Indian artifacts on display, and several of the
faculty and parents dressed in costumes. Mr. Olson served as “Homespun
Coordinator”.
At this time, there were few craft shows in the
area and “country” decorating was popular. “Homespun” grew from a few
booths inside the school building, to every classroom and hallway, and
numerous spaces outside being filled. Mrs. Shirley Holt took over
duties as Coordinator in 1985 and upon her retirement in 1997, Terry
Banta assumed these duties. Due to such large growth and unforeseeable
circumstances, in 2005, it was decided by the Homespun Committee that
this event would be split into two events, one in the spring and one in
the fall, the one in the fall fashioned as a “Holiday Homespun” show.
The two-event plan was held for two years, and then for 2007, it was
decided that only one show would be held again, always being the first
weekend in May.
Homespun has seen many changes through the
years. Meals are no longer served in the lunchroom; however, food
vendors are welcomed and a grilled hamburger or funnel cake may be
enjoyed, along with a tall glass of ice-cold freshly squeezed lemonade
or a treat from our Bake Sale. Spring flowers and plants are available
in addition to many fine arts and crafts. “Homespun Arts and Crafts
Show” is operated by volunteers including parents, students, faculty,
staff, alumni, and friends, with Gayle Hagewood the present
Coordinator. Proceeds benefit Athens Bible School.
